It has been my constant and invaluable companion ever since that night. 'The Films of Humphrey Bogart' dating from 'A devil with women' (1930) and on up to 'The harder they fall (1956) is the section that I read and re-read most. These reviews are the heart of this wonderful book. George Raft, Edward G Robinson, Bette Davis and of course Ms Bacall are all featured as part of the Warner Brothers 'Cast of Characters'. There is so much information crammed into this book that every Bogart fan should own a copy. 'The Ultimate Bogart Trivia Quiz' is a four part section that will make you an expert on the man and his life, along with a list of his radio and TV appearances. Highly recommended!Bogie: A Celebration of the Life and Films of Humphrey Bogart (Richard Schickel, 2006)Reviewed by Briant O'ConnellThis is a book I bought only this year (2008). A handsome volume crammed with wonderful photographs of Bogie on set and off. The portraits with Lauren Bacall in 'The Genuine Article' section by Richard Schickel are stunning! I laughed at the quote about Bogie telling the actor Dane Clark that the studio were going to change his name to Jose O'Toole! The well known quote from 'The Maltese Falcon' is taken from Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' and is actually ' We are such stuff as dreams are made onŠ' not 'of' though this is now in common usage thanks to the film. Speaking for myself these photographs show the integrity and character behind the eyes of Humphrey Bogart and as such the book is well worth a place in any collection. Buy it! |
